AED Placement & ADA Compliance: What Every Facility Needs to Know

April 29, 20263 min read

When someone collapses from sudden cardiac arrest, every second matters. Having an AED on-site can save a life, but only if it’s accessible, visible, and compliant.

What many organizations don’t realize is that how you mount your AED matters just as much as having one. Improper placement can create safety hazards, violate ADA guidelines, and increase liability.

This guide breaks down exactly what you need to know.

What Does the ADA Say About AED Placement?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) doesn’t have a rule specifically written for AEDs. Instead, AED cabinets fall under:

ADA Standards for Accessible Design – Section 307 (Protruding Objects)

This section applies to anything mounted on a wall in a walkway, including:

  • AED cabinets

  • Fire extinguishers

  • Handrails

  • Water fountains

  • Wall fixtures

The 4-Inch Rule (This Is Where Most Violations Happen)

According to ADA guidelines:

  • Objects cannot protrude more than 4 inches into a walking path

Most AED cabinets:

  • Stick out 6–10 inches

That means almost every standard AED cabinet automatically requires a compliance solution

The 27-Inch Rule (Cane Detection Requirement)

If an object sticks out more than 4 inches:

  • The bottom of that object must be 27 inches or less from the floor

Why?

Because individuals who are blind or visually impaired use a cane to detect objects at ground level. If the cabinet starts higher than 27 inches, it may not be detected, creating a hazard.

The 80-Inch Clearance Rule

Objects mounted above 80 inches are considered out of the head clearance zone.

This typically does not apply to AEDs, but it’s part of the same ADA section.

What This Means for Your AED Cabinet

Let’s apply the rules:

If your AED cabinet:

  • Protrudes more than 4 inches (most do)

  • AND the bottom is above 27 inches (most are)

You are not compliant unless you add a detection element below

How to Fix It (The Right Way)

There are two compliant installation options:

Option 1: Mount the Cabinet Lower

  • Bottom of cabinet: 27 inches or less

  • Fully compliant

  • Less common in modern installs

Option 2: Add a Detection Element Below (Most Common)

Install something below the cabinet that:

  • Starts at or below 27 inches from the floor

  • Extends out at least as far as the cabinet

This makes the hazard detectable with a cane.

What Can You Install Under the Cabinet?

If you don’t want a bleeding control kit, here are clean, professional options:

1. Wall-Mounted Shelf

  • Functional and simple

  • Can hold AED accessories or remain minimal

2. Low-Profile Wall Rail or Bumper

  • Minimal visual impact

  • Designed purely for compliance

3. Floor Pedestal or Stand

  • Clean, high-end appearance

  • Ideal for churches and lobbies

4. Recessed Cabinet

  • Eliminates the protrusion issue entirely

  • Best for new construction or renovations

Recommended AED Mounting Height

To stay compliant and practical:

  • Top of AED handle: 44–48 inches from the floor

  • Recommended: 46 inches

  • Bottom of cabinet: typically 30–34 inches

If mounted in this standard range, you will almost always need a detection element below

Why This Matters (Beyond Compliance)

This isn’t just about regulations.

Proper AED placement:

  • Protects individuals with disabilities

  • Reduces liability for your organization

  • Ensures faster response in emergencies

  • Creates a safer environment for everyone

The Biggest Mistake Facilities Make

Mounting an AED cabinet:

  • At eye level

  • In a hallway

  • With no detection element below

This creates a real hazard and is one of the most common ADA issues seen in inspections.
