Does Our Church Need an AED?
Many churches are beginning to ask an important question:
Should our church have an AED?
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen anywhere, including places of worship. Churches often serve diverse age groups and host large gatherings, which makes preparedness especially important.
What Is an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device designed to help restore a normal heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.
AEDs are designed for use by trained responders and can guide users through each step of the process.
Why Churches Are Considering AEDs
Churches are unique environments where:
• large groups gather regularly
• many attendees may be older adults
• events often take place in multiple areas of a building
Because of these factors, response time during an emergency is critical.
Are AEDs Required in Churches?
In most areas, AEDs are not legally required in churches. However, many organizations choose to install AEDs as part of their commitment to safety and preparedness.
Some insurance providers may also recommend or encourage AED programs.
What Happens Without an AED?
During sudden cardiac arrest, immediate CPR and defibrillation are critical.
Without an AED nearby, response time may be delayed while waiting for emergency responders.
More Than Just Equipment
Installing an AED is an important step, but effective preparedness also includes:
• trained volunteers
• clear response roles
• proper device placement
